Erling Haaland Scream or Erling Haaland Yelling is an exploitable image and meme format of Manchester City football player Erling Haaland expressing vehement frustration with a referee during the team's 3-3 draw against Tottenham in early December 2023. Following the match, social media users then superimposed and photoshopped the image onto various famous "scream" images from popular culture.

Origin

On December 3rd, 2023, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur played to a 3-3 draw. In the final minute of the game, Manchester City player Erling Haaland took contact and then completed a pass to forward Jack Grealish, who appeared to have a clear path to the Tottenham goal. However, as the pass connected, the referee blew the whistle and called a foul on Tottenham for the contact against Haaland, essentially ruining Manchester City's chance at a game-winning goal. Haaland was irate at the official after the play and screamed at him, with both videographers and photographers capturing the moment (shown below).^[5]

Spread

A photograph of Haaland's scream quickly began making the rounds on Twitter / X as social media users began photoshopping it onto various other famous "scream" pictures. For example, on December 3rd, 2023, Twitter user @leafricangooner^[1] photoshopped it onto the Woman Yelling at a Cat meme, gaining over 240 retweets and 7,300 likes in roughly 24 hours (shown below, left).

The following day, December 4th, the Twitter account @nocontextfooty^[2] posted a photoshop edit with Haaland's face superimposed onto The Scream, gaining over 8,300 retweets and 152,000 likes in less than 12 hours (shown below, right). The spread of the post was notably aided by Haaland quote-tweeting it,^[3] saying it caused him to smile for the first time that day.

The subsequent spread of the developing meme was covered by multiple publications, including The Sun,^[4] Daily Mail^[6] and CBS.^[7]
