Better Together's EU Membership Tweet refers to a tweet that was published on to the Twitter account of Better Together, a campaign that campaigned against Scotland leaving the United Kingdom during the 2014 Scottish independence referendum.
The tweet had been brought back into light in the aftermath of the 2016 European Union membership referendum where the promise was broken after the No campaign claimed that voting No in the referendum would protect Scotland's membership of the European Union.
Origin
Ahead of the Scottish independence referendum, held on September 18th, 2014, the two campaigns for Yes Scotland and Better Together were trying to persuade Scottish voters in the final weeks of the campaign to get to vote for them in the referendum.
On September 2nd, 2014, the Better Together Twitter account tweeted:
"What is the process of removing our EU citizenship? Voting yes. #scotdecides"
Reactions
Post-2016 EU referendum
After the UK voted to leave the Europrean Union, pro-independence supporters and campaigners brought the tweet into light and used it widely in campaigns to try and persuade the Scottish Government to have a second independence referendum
Impact
The tweet and the case behind it made an impact on the case of a second independence referendum as Scots were promised that voting No would ensure Scotland's membership of the European Union.
