Overview

Butch Hartman OAXIS Streaming Service Controversy refers to an online backlash toward a Kickstarter campaign for the streaming service OAXIS. The campaign and its creator Butch Hartman became the subject of scrutiny in mid-July 2018 after being accused of manipulating audiences to back a Christian-themed service under false pretenses.

Background

On June 18th, 2018, Hartman launched a Kickstarter campaign titled "OAXIS Entertainment," described as a "subscription-based entertainment platform designed to re-connect the family" (shown below). Within one month, the campaign gathered upwards of 1,290 backers and $268,134 in donations.[1]

Developments

On July 16th, 2018, Twitter user @Shonwolfbark tweeted a video of Hartman advertising the Kickstarter campaign on the Christian television program Marcus & Joni (shown below).




On July 19th, Twitter user @RiseFallNick tweeted a video of Hartman giving a presentation about OAXIS, describing the service as a Christian network.[3] The video was subsequently removed, but was reuploaded by several others (shown below).

That day, YouTubers PIEGUYRULZ & Vailskibum94 uploaded a video covering the controversy (shown below).



That day, Twitter user @Frankie_Ment4l tweeted an edited video in which Hartman jokes that the Tara Strong caused the death of voice actress Mary Kay Bergman (shown below). Meanwhile, a thread explaining the controversy was submitted by Redditor PM_ME_UR_1080TI to /r/Drama.[2]




on July 25th, 2018, Butch Hartman went to Twitter to address the controversies and accusations.
