Overview
The Discord Age Verification Controversy refers to reports that, by March 2026, the chat application Discord will require age verification worldwide via face scan or ID to access adult content, including age-restricted communities and blurred or marked-sensitive content shared in a Discord server. The report went viral in early February 2026, resulting in widespread backlash online, including memes and posts expressing frustration toward Discord and suggesting that people will move on to an alternative app, like TeamSpeak, if age verification is implemented.
Discord attempted to combat some of the negative reactions by making it clear that many preexisting, adult users would not need to verify their ages, as Discord will use information already given to them to estimate a user's age. Discord's page explaining the update also claims that provided identifications will be deleted after they are used to confirm a user's age, a claim that was doubted by some.
Background
On February 9th, 2026, it was reported that Discord would roll out mandatory, worldwide age verification for adult content. According to reports, age verification can be done through a face scan or by providing a photo of a valid ID. Worldwide age verification will be implemented by March 2026.
Discord policy head Savannah Badalich was quoted as saying that this is a move for the safety of minors, quoted by the BBC[1] as saying:
"Nowhere is our safety work more important than when it comes to teen users … Rolling out teen-by-default settings globally builds on Discord's existing safety architecture, giving teens strong protections while allowing verified adults flexibility."
In the same article, Drew Benvie, the head of social media consultancy Battenhall, claimed that Discord will use "inference" tools to determine whether or not some pre-registered users are adults, quoted as saying, "For most adults, age verification won't be required, as Discord's age inference model uses account information such as account tenure, device and activity data, and aggregated, high-level patterns across Discord communities."
Discord Support made a post on X[2] / Twitter about the update that day, garnering over 4,300 likes and 6,300 reposts in a day.
Developments
Update From Discord
On February 10th, 2026, Discord Safety published an update to their page about the age verification requirements on the Discord[3] website, responding to some of the backlash regarding the update.
The update claims that most Discord users will not even notice the change, because the age of users with accounts will be predicted using information that has already been given to Discord.
