Overview
Drake Texting Teenage Girls refers to two stories in which it was revealed that rapper Drake has been texting underage girls, Millie Bobbie Brown (15) and Billie Eilish (17). Though both girls have stated they are simply friends with Drake, the stories nevertheless struck people as creepy and potentially inappropriate.
Background
On September 17th, 2018, at the 2018 Emmy Awards, Access Hollywood interviewed Millie Bobbie Brown about her friendship with Drake. Brown stated, "He's honestly so fantastic. A great friend and a great role model… We just texted each other the other day and he was like 'I miss you so much,' and I was like 'I miss you more.'” She also stated that Drake offers her advice on boys.
Developments
Millie Bobbie Brown Fallout
The comments raised concerns that the relationship between the two was potentially inappropriate. This was exacerbated by the fact that it had been recently revealed that Drake was dating 18-year old model Bella Harris. The relationship was questioned by news outlets such as The Independent, with blogger Katie Goh writing:
Maybe it’s easy to read too much into the situation but personally, I can see no circumstances in which a 31-year-old man sending an “I miss you” text to a 14-year-old girl to whom he’s not related is appropriate, no matter how wise beyond her years that girl seems.
Some Twitter users accused Drake of "grooming" Brown, a practice in which older men lay the groundwork for underage girls to date them once they become of legal age (examples shown below).
On September 18th, YouTuber Nerd Suburbs posted a video parody of the controversy in which Drake is arrested for pedophilia. The video gained over 47,000 views (shown below).
After the backlash, Brown posted a defense of her friendship with Drake on her Instagram story, saying it was a "lovely friendship," and she advised the world to get back to "real problems" (shown below).
Billie Eilish
On November 25th, 2019, Vanity Fair posted a video interview with Billie Eilish, in which she revealed that Drake and her text, saying "Drake is, like, the nicest dude I’ve ever spoken to. I mean, I’ve only, like, texted him, but he’s so nice. Like, he does not need to be nice, you know what I mean?"
The comments reminded people of the Millie Bobbie Brown situation from the previous year. User @chelseabacci[1] wrote, "can we talk about drake texting billie eilish and millie bobby brown… he’s a whole ass grown man and they’re two underage girls… that’s some creepy shit if you ask me..", gaining over 70 retweets and 290 likes (shown below, left). User @morriah_l tweeted, "Does anyone else think it’s strange that Drake just has Billie Eilish and Millie Bobby Brown’s numbers? It’s definitely possible he’s just being a role model and it has to do with marketing but why’s a 32 year old man texting girls under the age of 17?" (shown below, right).
The story led to memes about Drake texting underage girls as well. Redditor JLHumor posted a Drakeposting meme in /r/MemeEconomy suggesting the use of Levar Burton in the meme due to the situation, gaining over 50,000 points (shown below, left). User @Shreiken_Demon posted a Drakeposting meme featuring Baby Yoda, getting over 140 points in /r/memes (shown below, right).
