Overview

Hytale Canceled refers to the cancelation of the Minecraft-inspired indie video game Hytale. The game, which was being developed by members of the popular Hypixel Minecraft server, began production in 2015 and was canceled in June 2025. Prior to its cancelation, the game garnered significant hype, with Hypixel Studios being acquired by Riot Games in 2020. The sudden cancelation of the game inspired strong reactions online, with some expressing sadness over the news and others accusing Hypixel Studios of scamming supporters of the game.

Background

Hytale began production in 2015 and was announced in 2018 alongside a trailer on the Hytale YouTube[1] channel on December 13th, 2018, that garnered over 61 million views in seven years. That day, the Hollywood Reporter[2] reported that Riot Games had invested in the studio. In April 2020, it was reported[3] that Hypizel Studios was acquired by Riot Games.

On July 22nd, 2022, a development update was published to the Hytale[4] website announcing that the game was being moved to a new engine, a change that was expected to be complete by the end of 2022.

Developments

Hytale Cancelation

On June 23rd, 2025, the CEO of Hypixel Studios, @Noxywoxy, made a post on X[5] and on the Hytale website announcing that Hytale had been canceled and that Hypixel Studios would begin "winding down." In the post, he writes that it is "not the outcome" that Riot Games or Hypixel Studios wanted. On why the game was canceled, he wrote:

Game development is brutally hard – especially when you’re trying to build something original that speaks to a creative, passionate community. Over time, as our vision evolved and the genre matured around us, the bar kept rising. Our technical ambitions grew more complex, and even after a major reboot of the game engine, the team found that Hytale still wasn’t as far along as it needed to be. It became clear we’d need a lot more time to get it to a place where it could support the ambitious vision for the game.

We looked at reducing scope, adjusting timelines, and finding new angles to keep moving forward. But each of those options would have meant compromising on what made Hytale special in the first place. It wouldn’t have been the game we set out to make. And it wouldn’t have been the game you deserve.

The post goes on to claim that the game's cancelation will not affect the Hypixel server. Noxywoxy expresses gratitude to Riot Games and to the community, ending the post, "Even though we’re closing this chapter, the spirit of Hytale and everything we hoped it could be will stay with us. We’re proud of what we built, and we’ll carry those lessons forward into whatever comes next." The post gained over 30,000 likes and 7,900 reposts in a day.

Online Reactions

The cancelation of Hytale inspired numerous reactions online as the news spread on social media in late June 2025.

Some of the top comments under the X announcement from Hypixel Studios CEO @Noxywoxy, made on June 23rd, 2025, criticize the development of the game, with X[6] user @ShitpostRock writing, "*Does nothing for 9 years then leaves*," garnering over 5,900 likes in a day and X[7] user @AbsolutelyAlpha writing, in part, "A community that very much cared about that game deserves some more in depth explanations," garnering over 3,000 likes in a day.

Some suggested that the company release the game in its current state as an open-source project.
