Overview

Marjorie Taylor Greene at the 2023 State Of The Union, also known as Marjorie Taylor Greene Shouting "Liar" refers to Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene's disruptive attendance at the 2023 State Of The Union address, where she wore a white furry coat, brought a balloon as a trolling reference to the Chinese Spy Balloon controversy and was chastised by some of her Republican colleagues for her loud heckling. Her theatrics subsequently inspired memes and criticism on social media after the event.

Background

On February 7th, 2023, U.S. President Joe Biden delivered his annual State of the Union address to Congress. Prior to the event, Twitter user and political reporter Kadia Goba^[1] photographed Greene with a white balloon, an apparent reference to the recent Chinese Spy Balloon controversy (shown below).

During the address, Greene attended in a white coat that stood out from her dark-suited colleagues and spent much of the event heckling Biden — at one point shouting "liar."^[2] Throughout the event, her boisterous heckling was photographed and criticized by many on social media, as well as some of her fellow Congresspeople (examples shown below).

Online Reactions

Amidst the criticism of Greene's outbursts in the following days, many on social media made memes about her attendance, appearance and demeanor, particularly using the photo of her shouting for image caption memes. For example, on February 7th, 2023, the Twitter account @WashProbs^[3] tweeted a picture of Greene and invited users to caption it (shown below, left), many responding with jokes comparing her to 101 Dalmatians character Cruella DeVille. Also that day, user @AdamBlickstein^[4] cracked a joke about George Santos in his joke about Greene, gaining over 2,400 retweets and 11,000 likes in one day (shown below, right).

Also on on February 7th, others made jokes about Greene's balloon photo, comparing her to Pennywise from IT. The Lincoln Project^[5] posted a Photoshop of the picture that day, which gained over 1,400 retweets and 12,000 likes in one day (shown below, left). Twitter user @LuckyovLegends^[6] then posted a similar photoshopped meme, gaining over 40 retweets and 500 likes in one day (shown below, right).
