Overview
The Mutahar Fake Engineer Controversy refers to allegations that YouTuber SomeOrdinaryGamers, aka Mutahar, is lying about working as an engineer as his main job outside of YouTube. The allegation was popularized by YouTuber Nikandros in late July 2025 through a video titled "Mutahar Has Been a Fake Engineer For 10 Years." In the video, he investigates Mutahar's consistent claim that YouTube is not his real job, showing evidence of what he believes are inconsistencies in Mutahar's claim. The video resulted in backlash towards Mutahar, including memes that make fun of him for being a fake engineer. On August 6th, 2025, Mutahar responded to the allegations, reminding viewers that he has stated multiple times that he's a university dropout and apologizing for any confusion.
Background
Nikandros "Mutahar Has Been a Fake Engineer For 10 Years" Video
On July 27th, 2025, YouTuber[1] Nikandros posted a video titled "Mutahar Has Been a Fake Engineer For 10 Years" that gained over 246,000 views in four days. In the video's description, he links to a Google Doc[2] with a timeline of Mutahar calling himself an engineer.
In the video, Nikandros examines Mutahar's claims that he is a computer engineer and that YouTube is not his main job. Nikandros shows numerous clips of Mutahar making these claims, then explains that it is illegal to claim you're an engineer in Ontario, Canada, where Mutahar lives. He then shows some clips where Mutahar claims he is a "video engineer" and a "cyber security engineer." Nikandros claims these are not the same things as a computer engineer. He then plays a few clips of Mutahar claiming he went to school to be an engineer but dropped out of university.
Nikandros plays some clips of Mutahar saying he's an "ex-engineer" and that he "worked as an engineer" for 10 years. He plays a clip of Mutahar claiming he was video editing before YouTube took off. He claims that Mutahar does not have an engineering degree, but continues to refer to himself as an engineer "because of tech jobs he supposedly had before 2013 or 2012."
Next, Nikandros shows a clip of Mutahar claiming he's a "day trader" in 2020, saying his dad refers to him as an engineer and then later claiming that "all he does" is invest his money. Nikandros lays out a timeline of all of this and how Mutahar consistently calls himself an engineer. He then suggests that maybe Mutahar has been lying about having a job outside of YouTube.
He plays a clip of Mutahar on a podcast claiming he's a CEO of a company and that he donates a lot ot charity, but doesn't write the donations off because it's a "shitty thing to do." Nikandros finds this odd and refutes the idea that Mutahar works 9-5 and manages to upload a video every day. He then criticizes some of Mutahar's content on tech-related topics, claiming Mutahar only seems to know the basics and adds no original ideas to his content.
Developments
