On October 22nd, 2012, Tumblr^[1] user ancestor posted a humorous four-panel comic about being caught by his mother during masturbation. The comic received over 22,300 likes and reblogs in nine years (shown below).

Spread

Prior to June 2018, the comic saw online spread through reposts. For example, on November 20th, 2014 iFunny^[2] user SloppyMcflopy reposted the image.

On June 28th, 2018, Redditor^[3] cocaineluna reposted the comic to the /r/4panelcringe subreddit where it gained over 9,100 upvotes in six months.

On January 4th, 2019, Redditor^[4] TheHehah3 posted the earliest known edit of the original comic in the /r/comedynecrophilia subreddit, where it received 140 upvotes in six months (authorship unconfirmed; shown below).

On April 6th, 2019, Redditor^[5] VXEQ92 reposted the meme in the subreddit, with the post gaining over 560 upvotes in six months.

Starting on April 13th, 2019, the comic gained viral popularity in /r/comedynecrophilia as source material for memes. For example, on April 14th, Redditor^[6] MetalSlayer69 posted a version that gained over 2,300 upvotes in six months (shown below, left). On April 15th, an unknown Redditor^[7] posted a Loss edit that gained over 11,400 upvotes in the same period (shown below, center).
