About

Danika Thibault is a female comedian who became known online as the Quirky, Annoying Stand-up Comedy Girl when clips of her stand-up set on the TikTok channel @comedyhereoften went viral due to many users thinking that she was cringe. The main joke that was ridiculed was about not being confident, just loud. The video, among others on the page, led to mass discourse on TikTok and elsewhere in November 2022, resulting in many TikTok duets and hateful comments (some related to the phrase "grip reaper"). Going into early 2023, screenshots of Thibault became common image macros on Twitter and elsewhere as she became a pop culture reference and character, likening her to a specifically quirky female archetype. The backlash Thibault faced led to many of the original videos being deleted.

Origin

On January 20th, 2022, the TikTok[1] page @comedyhereoften posted a clip showing comedian Danika Thibault telling a joke about her parents paying her rent. The video received roughly 221,300 plays and 4,600 likes in one year (shown below, left).

A few days later, on January 24th, 2022, the TikTok[2] page posted another clip from the same set in which Thibault joked about her friends having wealthy boyfriends and using e-mail. The video received roughly 185,000 plays and 3,900 likes in one year (shown below, right).

Months later on October 7th, 2022, a new stand-up set from Thibault was featured in a clip posted by the TikTok[3] page @comedyhereoften in which she joked about being bad at parking. The video received roughly 1.4 million plays and 27,800 likes in four months (shown below, left). A month later, around November 20th, @comedyhereoften posted another clip to TikTok (since deleted) of Thibault's set in which she joked about not being confident and instead just loud. The video inspired mass engagement, however, was largely negative, resulting in the TikTok video's eventual self-deletion. As evidence of its negative virality and timeframe, on November 20th, TikToker[4] @amanm9 posted a stitch with the TikTok, humorously claiming that he was going to harm himself because of Thibault. The stitch received roughly 5.4 million plays and 948,600 likes in three months (shown below, right).

It's very possible for her to work and improve. A lot of comedians bomb early in their careers, it's how they figure out what works and what doesn't. She reminds me of Whitney Cummings' early stuff. Very loud and obnoxious with jokes that work but are delivered terribly. Whitney figured it out, so can this chick. It just sucks that TikTok exists now to turn the terrible early stuff into the definition of her career.

The structure of the jokes are the problem, she introduces no misdirection, no suprise. She goes from setup to punchline in the same sentence and relies too heavily on her inflections and motions to provide the comedic effect.
