Get a Job, Stay Away From Her refers to a series of memes based on a viral string of comments left by American pop singer and actress Demi Lovato on a post by Instagram user StalkerSarah, likely on a photo of Sarah with Lovato's younger sister, Madison de La Garza, who was 14 at the time. The comments were made in April 2016 and went viral, inspiring memes over the following years as it was used as a catchphrase and exploitable format in which the comments are attached to images for comedic effect.
Origin
On or around April 8th, 2016, Demi Lovato posted and deleted a series of comments on one of Instagram user StalkerSarah's posts. StalkerSarah is known for posting photos with celebrities and has posted photos with Lovato several times. It is unclear which post Lovato commented on, although it may have been a photo of StalkerSarah with Lovato's sister, Madison de La Garza, who Sarah was reportedly seen with around the time.
The most notable comments left on the post read, "GET A JOB" and "STAY AWAY FROM HER," with another warning people about Sarah, calling her a stalker and claiming her family will take legal action against her. The comments were reported on by Just Jared[1] on April 8th, 2016, and by Vice[2] on April 15th, 2016.
Spread
The comments garnered viral spread over the following years, inspiring memes throughout the early 2020s. For example, on September 17th, 2021, JoyReactor[3] user anon posted a drawing referencing Shin Megami Tensei that uses the comments.
On March 3rd, 2023, the screammovies Instagram[4] page posted a video in which Demi Lovato quotes the comments to advertise Scream VI, garnering over 128,000 likes in a year. The video was reposted on social media numerous times, going viral.[5]
On July 25th, 2024, X[6] user @ask_aubry made a post referencing the comments in response to a Reddit post, garnering over 1,600 likes in five months. On October 11th, X[7] user @shivlestat posted the comments in response to news that Netflix is adapting Pride and Prejudice, garnering over 18,000 likes in two months.
On November 10th, Redditor u/KrayleyAML posted a meme to the subreddit /r/arcane[8] attaching a screenshot of the comments to an image from Arcane, garnering over 1,200 upvotes in a month. On November 26th, X[9] user @jailedamanda posted a screenshot of Elon Musk liking a post by Tom Cruise, writing, "GET A JOB STAY AWAY FROM HER," garnering over 7,600 likes in a week.
