About

Get This Man A Shield! is a memorable line uttered by character T'Challah/Black Panther in the official trailer for Marvel's upcoming movie Avengers: Infinity War. In same vein as Thanos' photoshops, a trend appeared among fans to pair a screenshot of the character and his phrase, as a snowclone, with various characters and personalities in order to make them get something they have lost.

Origin

On November 29th, 2017, Marvel Entertainment uploaded their official trailer for 2018's Avengers: Infinity War to YouTube (shown below, left). The trailer itself has gathered more than 82 million views in less than a week. In it, the character T'Challah/Black Panther can be heard saying "Evacuate the city. Engage all defenses and get this man a shield!" while showing pointing at an unnamed character offscreen, who is then revealed to be Captain America. An animated gif version began circulating soon after (shown below, right).

Spread

On the day of the trailer's release, a thread titled "And get this man a SHIELD"[1] along with a photograph of the cast from TV show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D was launched in the Marvel Studios subreddit, accumulating to over 600 upvotes in the next few days. The same day, a Facebook post from the official 9gag community about the trailer was made,[2] titled "Get this man a shield!" Over the course of the next days, many people commenting on the post began posting screenshots of the famous scene and coupling them with other Marvel characters and changing line to refer to something they may have lost (example shown below).
