About
Girl Emoji With Headphones GIF, also known as Woman Wearing Headphones Emoji, refers to a GIF of a female emoji with makeup on (lipstick and eyeshadow) listing to music with headphones while nodding her head to the music. The GIF became popularized on Twitter in mid-2023, specifically via a variant of the GIF that inserted her into the sky behind a boy standing in a field.
Origin
The original GIF of the Girl Emoji With Headphones was uploaded to the website Tinypic sometime in 2008. The Tinypic website has since gone defunct, however, the earliest known sharing of the GIF was in a Blogspot[1] post from August 11th, 2008, showing multiple text emoticon GIFs, including the Girl Emoji With Headphones (shown below, left). Years later, on March 8th, 2020, the emoji was added to the GIF website Tenor[2] by user JimVanAlbert. The Girl Emoji With Headphones first became a meme on the Russian web via posts on Tumblr[3] and Twitter[4] as early as September 2021 (example shown below, right).
Spread
Despite usage in 2021, the Girl Emoji With Headphones didn't gain viral usage until 2023, when a GIF of her in the sky behind a man standing in a field started circulating on Twitter. Before surfacing on Twitter, the aforementioned GIF was sourced from a "Pinkcore" TikTok video, uploaded by TikToker[5] @booger03__ on March 4th, 2023, gaining roughly 671,300 plays and 160,900 likes in three months (shown below).

Three months later, on June 18th, 2023, Twitter[6] user @theenormalgirl tweeted a GIF version of the intro to TikToker[5] @booger03__'s video (shown below, left), gaining roughly 12,800 likes in four days. The GIF gained variant, viral usage soon after, such as in a tweet sent by Twitter[7] user @beemoviehive on June 19th, who captioned it, "this is how it feels listening to pinkpantheress," gaining roughly 107,300 likes in three days (shown below, right).
Due to the virality of the "field" GIF, others on the app resurfaced the original Girl Emoji With Headphones GIF. The first to do so was Twitter[8] user @bklynb4by on June 20th, 2023, who captioned it, "I FOUND THE OG OMG," gaining roughly 12,800 likes in two days (shown below).
Thereafter, the GIF that Twitter[8] user @bklynb4by used gained viral usage from others on Twitter[9] going into late June 2023.
