Gloomer

About

Gloomer refers to several Wojak characters spread on 4chan describing young adults between ages 22 and 27 who lead an antisocial and uninspired life. While the earliest variation of Gloomer depicted the character as a 27-year-old female, a male version of the character gained spread in April 2019.

Origin

On September 17th, 2018, an anonymous 4chan user posted an image of a female Wojak titled "27-year-old Gloomer" to /pol/ board (shown below, left). Several captions included in the image described the character as 27-year-old female dissatisfied with her job and social relationships and leading a passive, introverted life.^[1] On September 18th, 2019, a male version of the character sharing similar threats was posted to /pol/ board (shown below, right).^[2]

Spread

While neither of the two characters saw notable spread, the word Gloomer has been used in multiple 4chan posts on /pol/ and other boards since September 2018 (examples shown below).^[3][4]

Starting in March 2019, an alternative version of Gloomer of unknown origin was circulated. The earliest available version of the image was posted by Instagram user goderotic on March 11th, 2019.^[5]

On March 22nd and 29th YouTube users The Abyss King and Unpersoner uploaded videos "Anthem of the Gloomer" and "Gloomer Music [2 Hours]" (shown below), with the latter gaining over 56,000 views in one month.

On April 9th, 2019, an anonymous 4chan user posted the image to /r9k/ board.^[6] On April 29th, 2019, an anonymous 4chan user speculated that the character might not have originated on 4chan.^[7]
