About

gm_construct is a map in the independent physics sandbox game Garry's Mod first introduced in 2006. One of the most popular maps in the game, gm_construct has been featured in countless Garry's Mod videos and in late 2010s grew to become a pop culture reference.

Origin

On November 29th, 2006, sandbox video game Garry's Mod was released for Microsoft Windows.[1] The game featured Construct, or gm_construct, designed by Garry's Mod developer Garry Newman, as one of the available maps.[2]

The first version of the map featured several objects and a panel for spawning various objects placed in a white room. The map was later changed to a large walled open space. In it's most recognized form, gm_construct is a large walled space which includes large open zones, a body of water, several apartment buildings and warehouses with rooms in them, including a white room and a dark room (development history video[3] shown below).

Spread

Since its introduction, gm_construct remained one of the most played maps in Garry's Mod, being as the primary choice for Sandbox game mode servers.[2]

Due to the popularity of Garry's Mod both among video creators, the map served as a location for multiple humorous videos filmed in the game. For example, on November 22nd, 2008, YouTuber[4] DasBoSchitt posted a video "The Gmod Idiot Box: Episode 1" that featured several sketches filmed on the map (shown below, left).

On April 8th, 2017, an unknown Redditor[5] posted one of the earliest viral memes reflecting gm_construct's impact on popular culture, using it in I Had to Grind for This View meme (shown below).

In late 2010s, gm_construct was referenced in multiple memes online, with users editing images of the map into various meme formats. For example, on November 25th, 2019, Twitter[6] user @MythyBoy_ posted a meme that received over 1,100 retweets and 5,000 likes in one year (shown below).
