Grass Skirt Chase is a song a part of the SpongeBob SquarePants original soundtrack used when the characters trying to chase something. The music has been remixed and become a part of the I Put Spongebob Music Over X edit trend like SpongeBob's 'Tomfoolery.'

Origin

The original "Grass Skirt Chase" song was composed by Sage Guyton and Jeremy Wakefield and its first usage in an episode of SpongeBob was in Season One, Episode 2B, titled "Ripped Pants," which premiered on July 17th, 1999 in the U.S. [1] On June 30th, 2016, YouTube[2] user SpongeDivers Music uploaded the most-viewed video of the song online, receiving over 9.9 million views in six years (shown below, left).

On February 1st, 2019, YouTuber[3] Shena uploaded a remix of the "Grass Skirt Chase" titled, "Spongebob song – Grass Skirt Chase (Remix And Rap)." The video received over 5.2 million views in three years and is the first-known, viral use of the soundtrack (shown below, right).



Spread

The soundtrack gained prominence on YouTube as remix material continuing into 2020. For example, on July 21st, 2020, YouTube[4] channel TrapMusicHDTV uploaded a remix that received over 11.4 million views in two years (shown below).



The song was later used as a part of the I Put Spongebob Music Over X edit trend. For example, on June 9th, 2019, YouTuber[5] viv uploaded an edit of a police chase video with "Grass Skirt Chase" as the audio. The video received over 1 million views in three years (shown below, left). On August 7th, 2021, YouTuber[6] MADGAI uploaded an edit showing YouTuber Ty Jokez[7] being chased by a "tribe member." The video received over 15.2 million views in one year (shown below, right).
