About

Greenscreen Silhouette Hood Irony, also known as Silhouette Walking Hood Irony or Silhouette Irony, refers to a trend in which video creators add free-to-download greenscreen silhouette animations of walking, running and jogging people, among other actions, into their shitpost meme compilations akin to Hood Irony. The trend started on Instagram in 2020, mostly due to the Instagram page @chxallah. In 2022, the trend became more prevalent on Instagram, later spreading to TikTok in early 2023 where the videos started to be labeled as Hood Lobotomy memes and the silhouettes were called Blud. The silhouette greenscreen videos primarily come from YouTuber Savvas Karampalasis and the stock image website Shutterstock. Many of the TikTok memes also used the He Was Running From A Cop Car sound effect.

Origin

Silhouette GIFs and greenscreen videos were used in hood irony Instagram content starting in 2020. On December 5th, 2020, the Instagram[1] page chxallah posted a video that showed a moldy, GTA video of the character landing on his feet, followed by a black silhouette walking, likely surfaced from YouTuber[7] Savvas Karampalasis. Over the course of two years, the video received over 750 views and 110 likes (shown below).

Spread

The Instagram page chxallah continued what was originally dubbed "silhouette irony" through multiple videos in late 2020. For instance, on December 19th, 2020, the Instagram[2] page chxallah posted a video that started with police dashcam footage of a man running away, followed by a Shutterstock[3] GIF called "Looping animated silhouette of a man running" with the top caption reading, "That nigga traveled 0 inches." Over the course of two years, the video received roughly 1,600 views and over 300 likes (shown below, left). On January 10th, 2021, Instagram[4] page chxallah posted another "silhouette irony" video, earning roughly 3,400 views and over 500 likes in two years (shown below, right).

In February 2022, the Instagram[5] page hoodnigga.rap2016 reposted chxallah's December 19th, 2020 video.[2] About a month later, on April 10th, 2022, the Instagram[6] page hoodnigga.rap2016 uploaded another video that used the Shutterstock[3] GIF, also referencing Dreamybull and Chills. The video received roughly 4,500 views and over 730 likes in nine months (shown below, left). Soon after, on May 30th, 2022, the Instagram[8] page hoodnigga.rap2016 reposted a video made by since-deleted Instagram page bugniniofficial that used a GIF of a walking silhouette surfaced from YouTuber[7] Savvas Karampalasis. The repost received over 910 likes in eight months (shown below, right).

Other Instagram creators started to hop onto the trend following hoodnigga.rap2016 and bugniniofficial. For instance, on August 31st, 2022, the Instagram[9] pages chxallah and c_o_c_o_n_u_t_s_ posted a collab video that used multiple silhouette greenscreens and GIFs, earning roughly 5,700 likes in five months (shown below).

On TikTok

Starting in late 2022, many of the hood irony Instagram videos were reposted to TikTok. However, original creators also surfaced on TikTok in accordance with the growing trend. For instance, on December 26th, 2022, TikToker[10] hoodirony.university posted a video that received roughly 145,000 plays and 32,700 likes in 18 days (shown below, left). On January 4th, 2023, TikToker[11] 27bplz408v91njkw3uo posted a similar video that received roughly 173,900 plays and 44,200 likes in nine days (shown below, right).
