About

Gwyneth Paltrow Seed Probiotics Ad is an advertisement and viral video in which actress and Goop wellness guru Gwyneth Paltrow promotes a probiotic pill in a monotone voice as her son loudly froths milk in the background, nearly drowning out her voice. Many users on TikTok and other platforms were entertained by Paltrow's apparent lack of effort in the ad and the humorous interruption as it spread in late August 2023 and was featured in various parodies and memes.

Origin

The video started circulating as an advertisement for Seed Probiotics on TikTok around August 30th, 2023. The original video has since been deleted, but on the same day that it started circulating, users screen-recorded it and posted the screen recording to social media.

TikToker @thejoshperson, for example, posted the TikTok (seen below) on August 30th after it was reuploaded and received over 17,000 likes and 271,000 views in less than a day.[1]

Spread

In late August 2023, many users found the ad popping up on their For You pages on TikTok, leading to considerable commentary. For example, on August 30th, user @nmillz1 posted a TikTok video talking about the Paltrow ad and arguing a script was visibly reflected in her glasses, earning almost 29,000 likes and over 180,000 views in just under a day.[2] They also commented on the fact that she appeared to vaguely nibble the pill rather than swallow it and only did one take, apparently not caring about the interruption of her son's loud milk-frothing.

In the comments section on this posting, users both proposed an origin in Paltrow's Instagram stories (seen below, left) and also shared that it had been served excessively to their For You pages (seen below, right).[2]

Melissa I feel like this had to be something she posted on her story organically and then the brand asked for the rights to use it 22h ago Reply user6111836078109 Yes it was in her story for a q&a and then they just posted it I guess but lol 20h ago Reply Melissa Cause there's just no way gahahah 22h ago Reply Taylor Stimbert Right? On X, videos and commentary on the ad were also posted. For example, on August 31st, X user @anammostarac called Gwyneth Paltrow a "marketing savant" in a post (seen below) that received over 1,700 likes in 12 hours.[3]

L T Ana Mostarac @anammostarac ยท 15h This is Gwyneth Paltrow's promo for a probiotics startup. Her son frothing milk in the background, the delicate supplement nibble, the ad script reflecting off her glasses, and her one-take dedication. This is a marketing savant. Moses is steaming some milk :

Users also posted parodies of the video on TikTok, such as user @GoldenTitanAstrology (seen below) who received over 600 views and 60 likes in a day on August 30th, 2023.[4]

Gwyneth Paltrow's Response

On August 31st, 2023, Paltrow then responded to the situation in an Instagram Story, claiming that the video was never intended to be an ad and that she was just taking the probiotic on her story, which incidentally was turned into an ad (seen below, in a TikTok which screen-captured it).[5][6]
