Hershey's Kisses Christmas Commercial refers to a televised commercial for Hershey's Kisses chocolate candy in which candy packaged in green and red foil ring like Christmas bells to the tune of "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." Starting in 2021, the commercial was parodied with videos in which various characters replaced the candy, with bell rings replaced with fitting sound effects.

Origin

In December 1989, a holiday commercial for Hershey's Kisses candy premiered.[1] In the commercial, which used stop-motion animation, green and red Hershey's Kisses candy pieces arranged in a Christmas tree shape ring like Christmas bells to the tune of "We Wish You a Merry Christmas."

The 15-second commercial since aired every Christmas season until 2012, when it was recreated with in a CGI version and with new audio. In 2020, the latest version of the commercial premiered (progression video[2] shown below).

On November 25th, 2008, YouTube[3] channel christmasads uploaded the commercial to the platform, where it received over 1.7 million views in fifteen years.

Spread

The commercial inspired parodies and recreations since at least as early as 2015. On January 5th, 2015, the YouTube channel for littleBits Electronics posted a YouTube[4] video that received over 281,000 views in eight years (shown below, left). On December 22nd, 2017, YouTube[5] user Andrew Olinsky posted a live-action recreation that garnered over 364,000 views in six years (shown below, right).

The commercial first achieved popularity as a meme format in 2020 after some time in December 2020 an unknown user uploaded a meme that replaced the candies with Among Us crewmates and Big Chungus. On December 24th, 2020, X[6] user @gugafood posted the earliest found reupload of the video (shown below).

On December 10th, 2021, X[7] user @thefrankoon posted an Among Us twerk meme based on the commercial (original post no longer available; YouTube[8] reupload shown below).

More similar memes were posted online in 2021 and the following years, including Thicc Omni-Man and Muscle Man versions.
