Wrapping Gifts as Something Not Even Remotely Close is a TikTok trend in which participants wrap holiday presents in a manner that disguises the contents as something of a different shape.

Origin

On December 17th, 2020, TikToker @elijahmooney8 shared a video in which they wrap a cocktail shaker and cocktail recipe book so that it more closely resembles a teddy bear. They led off the video with the chyron, "My favorite tradition every Christmas: Wrapping gifts as something not even remotely close." The post received 7.1 million views, 1.9 million reactions and 14,900 comments (shown below). They set the video to the song "Pennies From Heaven" by Louis Prima.

Spread

Following the post, people began posting their own versions of the trend set to the same song. For example, on December 19th, 2020, TikToker @shutupzowa shared a variation with the chyron "wrapping Christmas gifts as something completely different." The post received more than 2.3 million views, 650,000 reactions and 5,200 comments in less than two days (shown below, left).

On December 20th, TikToker @juixxe posted a variation of the trend. The post received more than 17 million views, 4.2 million reactions and 35,000 comments in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).

As of December 21st, more than 117,000 videos use "Pennies From Heaven" by Louis Prima on TikTok.[1]
