Hospital "Don't Do X" Posts refers to a series of memes in which POV photographs from hospitals rooms and ambulances are combined with warnings not to do a certain action, implying that performing that action could land one in a hospital. The format gained popularity following a viral tweet posted in early November 2021.
Origin
Two most commonly used images used in this meme format are a photograph taken by rapper Lil Xan on September 25th, 2018, inside the ambulance which carried him to a hospital after he "ripped something in his stomach" after eating "too many Hot Cheetos,"[1] and another photograph of unknown origin taken inside a hospital room some time before March 13th, 2020 (photographs shown below, left and right).[2]
On November 3rd, 2021, Twitter[3] user @breezeobreeze tweeted the second photograph, captioning it, "DONT EAT STEAK FROM DOLLAR TREE." The post, which implied that eating steak bought at Dollar Tree would result into being put on IV support, gained over 26,400 retweets and 285,700 likes in two months (shown below).
Spread
In the following weeks, multiple similar tweets using the image were posted by users on Twitter. For example, on November 4th, 2021, Twitter[4] user @SBADZMD posted a meme warning against "getting penis enlargement from anyone in Yeoville." The meme gained 550 retweets and over 2,500 smiles in two months (shown below, left). On December 1st, 2021, Tumblr[5] user distinguishedbaloney posted a meme that received over 18,400 likes and reblogs in one month (shown below, right).
In January 2022, the format saw a surge in use due to viral posts warning against eating Taco Bell Wings and using QR codes edited into memes. The post made by Twitter[6] user @ethermul on January 9th, 2022, (shown below, left) introduced the ambulance photograph taken by Lil Xan as an alternative template for the format.
