I Defy You Heart Man is a quote said by SpongeBob SquarePants character Patrick Star while on a violent rampage due to not receiving a special gift on Valentine's Day in an episode of the series. In the years since the episode aired, the quote has often been repeated on social media, particularly on Valentine's Day, and the scene itself has become a redraw reference.

Origin

In the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Valentine's Day," which aired February 14th, 2000,^[1] SpongeBob takes Patrick to a carnival while he prepares an extravagant gift for him. However, the gift is delayed, and SpongeBob improvises by giving Patrick a "friendly handshake." This causes Patrick to go berserk and begin destroying the carnival. Upon approaching a mascot in a heart costume, he cries, "I defy you heart man!" before tearing the costume in two.

The scene was first uploaded to YouTube on October 17th, 2010 by YouTuber SuperGtaFail, gaining over to 780,000 views in thirteen years (shown below).

Spread

The scene became a common reference and repost in the years since it aired, particularly on Valentine's Day. For example, SpongeBob-themed Twitter account @FoxyGrandpa62^[2] posted it on February 14th, 2013, gaining over 380 retweets and 450 likes in eleven years (shown below, left), and has reposted it on multiple Valentine's Days since. On February 14th, 2023, user @MossAnimation^[3] quoted the line in a tweet celebrating the episode's anniversary, gaining 12 retweets and 40 likes in one year (shown below, right).

The scene has also been used as a redraw reference. For example, on September 22nd, 2011, DeviantArt^[4] user Imagine23 redrew the scene as a Mega Man scene, gaining over 230 likes in thirteen years (shown below, left). It has also been the subject of some video remixes. For example, on March 23rd, 2023, YouTuber Nota posted a parody of the scene using Pizza Tower characters, gaining over 114,000 views in nearly one year (shown below, right).
