I Don't Understand This Trilogy refers to a series of image macro of three films from two or more different franchises that nevertheless share similarities in their titles or covers, joking that the outliers are somehow part of the same "trilogy."

Origin

The earliest known use of the meme was posted to Imgur^[1] on July 25th, 2012, where an unknown Imgur user uploaded an image of three film posters, two from the Batman The Dark Knight series and the third film being the standalone film The Black Knight. (shown below)

Spread

The meme continued to spread through various social media platforms throughout the 2010s. For example, on July 22nd, 2015, 9GAG^[2] user little_moe uploaded an image of three film posters written "this movie trilogy… Is very hard to understand." The image received more than 21,000 upvotes in seven years (shown below, left). On December 24th, 2019, iFunny^[3] user Fat_horse_balls uploaded an image of three film posters that have similar color patterns, receiving more than 41,700 smiles in three years. On the next day, Reddit^[4] user GoingintoCeleste114 reposted it to /r/me_irl subreddit, where it received more than 35,400 upvotes in three years (shown below, right).

On December 9th, 2022, Twitter^[5] user @Akfamilyhome uploaded a tweet with the format that received more than 1,700 likes and 296 retweets in one month (shown below, left). On December 26th, 2022, Facebook^[6] user Arieza Akbary Trieputra uploaded an image of Netflix posters for Tawawa on Monday, Carole & Tuesday , and Wednesday with the caption "Can't understand this trilogy." The post received 179 reactions and 546 shares in one week (shown below, right).
