I Know She Be Running A McDonald's Like It's The Navy refers to an image macro of a stocky woman in a tuxedo vest posing on a porch with the caption, "i know she be running a mcdonalds like its the navy." It was originally posted to Twitter in October 2019 but received attention across platforms like Instagram going into 2020. In late 2021, the meme saw new usage as a phrasal template across Twitter. In early 2023, many cis female and lesbian TikTokers discovered the woman's Tumblr blog called bigtallbutchstyle and started sharing slideshows of her fit pics.

Origin

On October 29th, 2019, the now-suspended Twitter account @pandappIes (pandappies) tweeted the original version of the meme. A full screenshot of the tweet (shown below, left) was posted to Instagram^[1] on December 27th, 2019, that included @pandappIes' handle. However, as evidence of a late October origin, replies to the original tweet can still be accessed. For instance, on October 29th, 2021, Twitter^[2] user @GeorgiieeR replied to the original tweet. His reply (shown below, right) received 566 likes over the course of two years.

The original photo of the woman in the meme was posted to Tumblr^[9] on March 10th, 2016, by the blog bigtallbutchstyle, earning over 570 notes in seven years (shown below). The Tumblr^[10] blog bigtallbutchstyle is the woman's page. Her bio reads:

A site for queer folks interested in style and fatshion for the big & tall clothing-wearing non-cisgender-male individual. Most outfits created on a shoestring budget, so look for thrifting and sale tips, too.

The tweet was first reposted to Instagram^[3] on December 26th, 2021, by the account @postoffice.v1. The post received roughly 6,800 likes over the course of two years. The tweet continued to be reposted on Instagram going into 2021. For instance, Instagram^[4] account @zuccccccccccc reposted the meme on February 2nd, 2021, and received roughly 24,300 likes over the course of nine months.

Also on February 2nd, 2021, Twitter^[5] account @jiuphemisms tweeted the first known variation use of the catchphrase. The tweet (shown below) used a photograph of Korean singer Dreamcatcher Jiu and received 90 likes over the course of nine months.

On August 22nd, 2021, Twitter^[6] user @naranciaism posted the first known version of the catchphrase as a phrasal template, making a joke about how 17-year-olds run boba tea shops. The tweet (shown below) received roughly 222,000 likes over the course of three months.

On November 10th, 2021, the catchphrase received more attention on Twitter after Twitter^[7] account @MoodyKnowsNada used the catchphrase to caption a photo of Kenosha, Washington shooter Kyle Rittenhouse when he was younger and dressed as a police officer. The tweet (shown below) received roughly 35,200 likes over the course of 13 days.

The above tweet was also reposted to Instagram^[8] the next day, on November 11th, 2021.

On TikTok

On January 29th, 2023, TikToker^[11] doodoobuttsupreme posted a video with text overlay reading, "y'all the mcdonald's manager lesbian is kinda…" and proceeded to show multiple photos from bigtallbutchstyle's Tumblr.^[10] In one day, the video received roughly 304,100 plays and 57,300 likes (shown below, left). Soon after on January 29th, TikToker^[12] macklemorefanfiction posted a video in which she explained that her and her friends had been obsessed with the meme ever since they found bigtallbutchstyle's Tumblr.^[10] TikToker macklemorefanfiction showed how, in the past, her ad her friends had gotten each other shirts and posters with the meme on them. Over the course of one day, the video received roughly 141,600 plays and 25,400 likes (shown below, right).
