I Saw You In My Dream or Was I Getting Money? refers to a series of hustle culture memes including image macros based on a text conversation where the left participant writes, "I saw you in my dream" and the right participant responds, "was I getting money?" The left participant says they were not and the right participant responds, "then it wasn't me." The original iteration of the meme went viral in May 2023 when it was posted to X (Twitter), inspiring new variations going forward, some attaching character from various fandoms to each texter.

Origin

On May 25th, 2023, X[1] user @qowieueurhfhdjk posted a screenshot of a text exchange between two people. The left sender writes, "I saw you in my dream." The right responds, "Was I getting money?" The left responds, "No." The right responds, "Then it wasn't me" and the left finally responds, "Ok." The post gained over 20,000 likes and 3,800 reposts in seven months (shown below).

Spread

The mem egained viral spread over the following months as an exploitable. The original meme was reposted by Instagram[2] user stendo on May 25th, 2023, garnering over 200,000 likes in seven months. On June 14th, X[3] user @goobysart posted an edit that gained over 1,400 likes in six months. On June 19th, Tumblr[4] user solivigantkaiba posted a pirate themed edit that gained over 19,000 notes in six months (shown below).
