About

I Took Her To My Penthouse refers to the lyric "I took her to my penthouse and I freaked it" from the song "King's Dead" by Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, Future, and James Blake. The lyric became popularly used in video shitposts on Instagram in the spring of 2018. The videos generally show two characters during the lyric "I took her to my penthouse" and then a sexual image of the characters with the line "and I freaked it."

Origin

On February 15th, 2018, Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, Future, and James Blake released the music video for the track "King's Dead." During Future's verse on the song, he says the lyric "I took her to my penthouse and I freaked it" (shown below, lyric at 1:38).

Spread

On March 10th, 2018, a video compilation of people dancing to the lyric was posted to YouTube by Hill60, gaining over 18,000 views (shown below). The challenge was not the basis for future memes using the lyric.

In May of 2018, multiple video posts using the lyric appeared on Instagram. One of the first posts to use the lyric paired an edited clip of the lyric with images of Scooby-Doo. While the original poster is unknown, the clip appeared on YouTube and Instagram[1] on May 3rd, 2018 (shown below).

After that video was posted, several others appeared on Instagram with various characters. Other popular edits include a version featuring M&Ms[2] (shown below, left) and one featuring Bill Cosby. [3] Another edit on used the meme with Mr. Krabs (shown below, right). As of May 9th, 2018, there are over 100 posts on Instagram under the tag "#itookhertomypenthousethenifreakedit."[4]
