"I'll Just Put This Over Here With the Rest of the Fire" is a memorable quote uttered by the character Maurice Moss on the British situational comedy television series The IT Crowd. Online, have used screenshots and videos of Maurice saying the line to express opinions about compounding problems.

Origin

On February 3rd, 2006, the episode of The IT Crowd entitled "Calamity Jen" aired.^[1] In the episode, the character Maurice (portrayed by Richard Ayoade) attempts to put out a fire in his office, when his extinguisher catches fire. As he carries the extinguisher, he says "i'll just put this over here with the rest of the fire."

On May 19th, 2009, The IT Crowd YouTube channel shared a video of the scene. Within 12 years, the video received more than 2.6 million views (shown below).

Spread

Over the next decade, screenshots of Maurice holding the extinguisher grew in usage. For example, on August 30th, 2012, Tumblr ^[2] user angelintardis posted a GIF of the moment. The post received more than 545 notes in less than eight years (shown below).

On November 16th, 2016, Facebook user thegeekstrikesback posted a video of the moment with the caption "How my life is going." The post received more than 2,100 views, 1,300 reactions and 385 shares in less than four years (shown below).

On April 12th, 2020, Redditor ^[3] shared a variation of the meme. The post recieved more than 19,000 points (94% upvoted) and 260 comments in less than 24 hours (shown below).
