On February 27th, 2019, an episode of Joe Rogan's online podcast "The Joe Rogan Experience" featured American radio talk show and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones as a guest.^[1] At one moment of the episode, Jones, seemingly out of context, says that "he is kind of retarded". The episode gained over 11.7 million views in three weeks.

On February 27th, YouTube user Billy Verhaegen uploaded the fragment with the quote to the website.^[2] The video gained over 132,500 views in three weeks. On the same day, the user posted the video to /r/youtubehaiku subreddit where it gained over 7,000 upvotes in the same period.^[3]

On February 28th, 2019, Redditor^[4] Guy_Named_Sheev posted a still image from the episode paired with the quote to /r/dankmemes subreddit. The post gained over 18,200 upvotes in three weeks.

In the following days, the image macro saw active use on several subreddits, including notable posts in /r/dankmemes^[5] and /r/smashmemes.^[6]
