About
Jack and Rose Dancing, also known as Jack and Rose Spinning, refers to an exploitable template taken from the 1997 movie Titanic starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The meme shows the characters Jack and Rose dancing in the third class section of the boat. They are spinning around, screaming and laughing. Meme creators overlay text in each panel to make the characters over-enthusiastic about an activity thought of during the ecstasy of dancing, usually being ill-advised.
Origin
On December 19th, 1997, the movie Titanic was released to theaters. Within the movie, there was a scene in which the characters Jack Dawson and Rose Bukater are dancing in the third class section of the boat. In the scene, they're very happy, smiling and dancing and spinning each other around. The scene was uploaded to YouTube on March 30th, 2012, by the channel 20th Century Studios UK, where over the course of ten years, it's received roughly 7.1 million views (shown below).
The three-panel template of Jack and Rose dancing was first posted on April 14th, 2012, on a blogspot site within a blog called Titanic-100 Year Anniversary (shown below, left).[1] The template was first used in a meme on the website Funny or Die,[2] when an unknown meme creator inserted Leonardo DiCaprio skipping in the movie Inception into the template (shown below, right).
Spread
The template first trended in Spanish-speaking meme circles as is evident in a meme that translates to "I threw myself a fart… / Seriously !!! / Yes !!! And I think I fucked up…" that was circulating online as early as 2013 on Memedroid[3] (shown below). However, the original creator is unknown.
On November 16th, 2020, Twitter[4] user @_onerolita posted a meme that exploited the template, earning roughly 3,200 likes over the course of two years (shown below, left). A year later, on October 6th, 2021, Twitter[5] user @MEMESV_PARODIA also posted a Spanish-written meme, earning over 80 likes in three months (shown below, right).
On December 27th, 2021, a meme using the template was posted to Imgur[6] by user Mazz69, who inserted text that read, "I'm unemployed / I live with my parents / Let's have a kid!!!" The meme (shown below) received roughly 1,700 upvotes over one month.
The meme started circulating on Instagram going into 2022. For instance, on January 27th, 2022, Instagram[7] page @northwest_mcm_wholesale posted a meme that read, "I'm mentally ill / I'm an alcoholic / Let's open a vintage store," earning roughly 3,200 likes in two weeks (shown below).
