Joint Slay is a slang phrase that originates from a viral tweet that read, "That moment when you, a queen, come across another queen, and discuss how best to maximise your joint slay." The tweet was widely shared on Twitter and Tumblr, leading to the popularity of the idea of two people "maximizing" their "joint slay." The phrase ties back to the slang term slay, which is derived from gay AAVE lingo, and denotes someone doing something exceedingly well.

Origin

In May 2016, X (formerly Twitter) user @NaturallyTiss^[1] posted an image of two women dressed in traditional attire with the caption, "That moment when you, a queen, come across another queen, and discuss how best to maximise your joint slay."

Spread

On August 27th, 2016, Tumblr^[2] user @saathiray replied to a repost of the aforementioned tweet, saying, "I don’t even care that I already reblogged this because seriously, how is this not a masterpiece painting hanging in the Smithsonian? Everything about this photo just says Romanticism to me," gathering over 590,000 notes in seven years (seen below).

The phrase "joint slay" continued to be used online in subsequent years, as seen in a December 24th, 2019 post by X^[3] user @a_roach, which gathered over 6,000 likes in four years (seen below, left). A photo of directors Bong Joon Ho and Taiki Watiti was shared by X^[4] user @goslngs on September 7th, 2020, with the caption, "thinking about their joint slay," gathering over 47,000 likes in three years (seen below, right)

On August 16th, 2022, Instagram^[5] page @millionairegrindset posted a photo of HRH Collection: and Christian Walker using the word joint slay, gathering over 300 likes in a year (seen below)
