On January 6th, 2021, X[1] user @pukicho posted a drawing parodying a horror movie trope of children making disturbing drawings that depict a malevolent presence haunting them or their families. The humorous drawing, titled "kids drawings in horror movie," which depicted a dad, a mom, a kid and a shadowy figure captioned "yogshghsoth" (shown below), received over 11,000 reposts and 67,000 likes in four years.

Between September 6th and October 31st, 2023, Pixiv[2] artist Tsuno posted a series of four artworks subverting the trope, depicting the "monster" as a friend or a member of the family and revealing that the kid's drawings depicted wholesome situations (first drawing in the series shown below). The artworks saw viral spread online through reposts.

On February 12th, 2024, X[3] user @monjudoh reposted a humorous artwork based on the trope in which Dragon Ball character Broly grabbed the being by its head, with the post (shown below) gaining over 1,500 reposts and 7,300 likes in one year.

In the following months, the image was widely circulated online. For instance, on April 5th, 2024, iFunny[4] user Leavanny made a repost that gained over 12,100 smiles in 10 months.

In February 2025, more artworks parodying the trope were shared online. For example, on February 17th, 2025, X[5] user @Akiyumma posted a version featuring Yakuza character Kazuma Kiryu that received over 7,100 reposts and 92,000 likes in two days (shown below).
