Korean Girl in a Gru Scarf Punching, also known as Asian Woman Punch POV, refers to a POV Punch meme based on a photograph of a young Korean woman wearing a black-and-gray striped scarf winding up a punch with a blue sky behind her. Posted by South Korean influencer Soal in October 2022, the photo achieved virality as a caption format in 2024, inspiring redraws and being used in Ouhhh Husbant memes.
Origin
On October 13th, 2022, South Korean influencer 소올soal posted a humorous selfie photograph in which she is pretending to punch the screen. The photograph falls within the POV Punch meme format, similar to Welcome to the Family and Pepe Punch memes. The photograph (shown below) garnered over 52,000 likes on Instagram[1] in two years.
On July 15th, 2024, X[2] user @LookAtMyMeat1 posted the photograph, captioned, "first date idea," a reference to a meme of the same name. The post (shown below) received over 7.8 million views, 7,400 reposts and 129,000 likes in four months.
Spread
On July 17th, 2024, the Facebook[3] page Doujinshiz Screenshotz reposted the caption meme, with the post gaining over 19,000 reactions and 3,000 shares in four months. Also on July 17th, X user @BaldrekrGaming quoted the post with a joke about the girl in the photograph wearing a similar outfit to the character Gru from the Despicable Me films, notably the striped grey-and-black scarf also worn by the character. The post (shown below) received over 9,700 reposts and 224,000 likes in four months.
In the following months, the photograph inspired redraw fan art. For example, on October 30th, 2024, X[4] user @neas57 posted a Chainsaw Man redraw that garnered over 480 reposts and 5,200 likes in two weeks (shown below).
On November 4th, 2024, X[5] user @Andr3jH used the photograph in an Ouhhh Husbant meme referencing the 2024 United States Presidential Election, gaining over 11,000 reposts and 218,000 likes in one week (shown below).
Following the post, the photograph saw more use as part of the Ouhhh Husbant meme format.
