The cat version of the meme was originally posted online in March 2023 and became a popular derivative over the following months, inspiring a viral TikTok and YouTube audio and animations in early 2024.

Origin

On March 21st, 2023, X^[1] user @Hannyer_man posted a meme derived from the "Life or death for Berryboy" format in which a group of people decide on "bath" for a cat, resulting in it becoming wet, displayed through the soggy cat meme, garnering around four likes in a year (shown below).

Spread

The meme gained viral spread over the following months, inspiring new variations. On March 26th, 2023, it was reposted to iFunny,^[2] garnering over 3,200 smiles in a year. On June 16th, YouTuber^[3] Memetastic posted a voiced over version of the meme that gained over 108,000 views in nine months (shown below).

The audio from Memetastic's video became the subject of animations on YouTube and TikTok over the following months, seeing significant use in early 2024. On February 19th, 2024, YouTubers^[4][5] kalen and Eggz posted animations using the audio that gained over 48,000 and 212,000 views respectively in a month (shown below, left and right).

On February 23rd, TikToker^[6] @beebcore posted an animation based on Team Fortress 2 using the audio, garnering over 124,000 views in two months (shown below).
