Mataram Is Red. Mataram Is Blue commonly known as Ho'oh refers to a catchphrase from a video of several people talking about the Indonesian football rivalry between PSIM Yogyakarta and Persis Solo, and claiming that Mataram should be blue instead of red. Mostly Indonesian speakers create various edits and exploitables of the dialogue.
Origin
On June 23rd, 2018, YouTube[1] user Agus Priyanto uploaded a video titled "mataram is Red Blue is film". In the video, several people appear. One of them wears a long-sleeved shirt that reads "Mataram should be blue instead of red," and another, wearing button-down shirt, points at graffiti that says "MATARAM IS RED" (referring to Indonesian Football team PSIM Yogyakarta and Persis Solo that are rivals with each other). At the end of the video, a third person wearing a denim jacket awkwardly says "Ho'oh". The video received more than 880,000 views in three years. On the same day, Facebook[2] user Taufik Ardiansyah reposted the video, receiving 268 reactions and 111 shares (shown below).
Spread
On April 1st, 2021, Facebook[3] user IKki reposted the video, receiving more than 4,600 reactions and 2,400 shares. Starting on April 2021, the video became popular as Indonesian speakers created memes that related to it. For example on April 24th, 2021, Facebook[4] user Unkl Mitball uploaded an I Have Two Sides meme related to the catchphrase. The image received 256 reactions and 81 shares (shown below, left). On April 28th, 2021, Facebook[5] user γ γ£ γ uploaded a Name Pun meme by using the characters Ram and Rem from anime Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu ("Mata" means eye in English) to Anime Lβ‘vers Indonesia group. The post received more than 1,000 reactions and 1,300 shares (shown below, right).
Some Indonesian speakers also create various edit videos that reference the meme. For example on April 26th, 2021, YouTube[6] user Ya Begitulah uploaded an edited video titled "Mataram Is Red??? Mataram Is Blue!!! Ho'ohβ¦" by using a scene from Spongebob Squarepants . The video received more than 570,000 views in four months (shown below, left). On May 1st, 2021, YouTube[7] user Muhammad Vatar uploaded a video titled "Mataram is red tapi setiap kata-kata adalah gambar dari google" (Eng. Mataram is red but every word is represented by an image from google). The video received more than 730,000 views in three months (shown below, right).
