Michael Jordan's "And I Took That Personally" refers to a reaction image of basketball legend Michael Jordan saying "And I took that personally" while on the set of The Last Dance. The image has been used with captions describing a small slight against another party.

Origin

In The Last Dance, the ESPN documentary covering the 1997-1998 Chicago Bulls, Michael Jordan describes several moments from that season which he took personally and used as motivation for strong performances in games. On June 8th, 2020, YouTuber DoubleDuck posted a compilation of things Jordan admitted to taking or appeared to take personally from the documentary, gaining over 3.3 million views (shown below).

The moment of Jordan saying "So I took that personally" shown in the reaction image never actually happens in the documentary. On May 17th, 2020, Twitter user @OGMelo_^[1] posted a Nobody joke about how Jordan claims to have taken many things personally in the documentary, gaining over 16,000 retweets and 78,000 likes (shown below).

Spread

Shortly after @OGMelo_'s tweet, the image of Jordan saying "And I took that personally" began spreading on Twitter. On May 18th, 2020, Twitter user @Steph_I_Will^[3] posted an Avengers meme using the image (shown below, left). On May 21st, 2020, Twitter user @tirhakalove^[2] posted a joke about Lana Del Rey with the image, gaining over 18,000 retweets and 96,000 likes (shown below, right).

The template also gained popularity on Reddit. On October 4th, Redditor Kyle3993 posted a Tiger King meme to /r/TigerKing,^[4] gaining over 790 points in one day (shown below, left). On October 3rd, Redditor JimmyD416 posted the joke about Trump getting COVID-19, gaining over 5,200 points before being taken down by moderators in /r/meme (shown below, right).^[5]
