About
"Mr. Douchebag" is a song and flash-based music video by the band Your Favorite Martian. The song features a character named Mr. Douchebag, which the music video animates as a muscular, tanned man with a chin-strap beard, red sunglasses, spiked up hair, a naval-revealing tank top and green shorts. Mr. Douchebag is a parody of overly and performatively masculine men that inspired a series of parodies and remixes on YouTube that date back to 2011.
Origin
On May 4th, 2011, the band Your Favorite Martian debuted the music video for "Mr. Douchebag" on YouTube. Within 10 years, the video received more than 24 million views (shown below).
Spread
Within one day of the video's publishing, people began remixing the song and the video. On May 5th, 2011, YouTuber Idan is bad shared a lyric video of the song that received more than 58,000 views in less than 10 years (shown below, left). That day, SpedUpSongs2011 posted a sped up version of the song that received more than 52,000 views in less than 10 years (shown below, right).
Resurgence
In 2019, a series of mashups and remixes of the video grew in popularity. On October 17th, 2019, YouTuber Mr. Douchebag Mashups published one of the earliest variations entitled "Despicibag" (shown below).
The following week, Mr. Douchebag Mashups published "Mr douchebag for smash ultimate," which received more than 15,000 views, helping to spread the meme further (shown below, left).
Over the next year, Mr. Douchebag inspired a series of remixes that added other elements into the music video. On October 24, 2020, YouTuber Sloano iF published "Me and the boys dances Mr. Douchebag." The post received more than 290,000 views in less than six months (shown below, right).
On January 15th, 2021, Lessons in Meme Culture published a video analysis of the meme, detailing its history and exploring its resurgence. The post received more than 85,000 views in less than 24 hours (shown below).
