Mr. Krabs, I Have an Idea refers to a soundbite from the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Patty Hype" in which SpongeBob descends from the ceiling as an angel singing "Mr. Krabs, I have an idea." The moment became a TikTok sound and slideshow trend in late 2023, in which meme creators paired the sound dastardly and evil "ideas" akin to dark humor.

Origin

On February 24th, 2001, season 2, episode 5b of SpongeBob SquarePants titled, "Patty Hype" aired on American television.^[1] In one scene, SpongeBob descended from the ceiling dressed as an angel, singing "Mr. Krabs, I have an idea."

The scene was posted by TikToker^[2] @spongebobbymeboy on August 31st, 2023, gaining roughly 1.6 million plays and 165,400 likes in three months (shown below).

The aforementioned video predominantly inspired the scene's memetic usage, evident in the first viral video to use the sound,^[4] posted by TikToker^[3] @hannahhuppenbauer on October 20th, 2023, who proposed putting shot glasses on a Keurig cup holder, gaining roughly 4.6 million plays and 443,300 likes in one month (shown below).

Spread

Going into November 2023, the sound^[4] from the original video continued to amass usage. For instance, on November 3rd, 2023, TikToker^[5] @coolgalcal posted a video with text reading "Me trying to convince my friends to take edibles and play wii," receiving roughly 1.3 million plays and 306,200 likes (shown below, left).

On November 6th, 2023, TikToker^[6] @bitchbabey2.0 used the sound with a caption about convincing their parents what to eat for dinner, gaining over 742,500 plays and 151,400 likes in three weeks (shown below, right).

Slideshows

Later in November 2023, creators on TikTok began uploading photo slideshows that used the sound,^[4] predominantly outlining evil ideas. The slideshows started on November 20th, 2023, across posts from three TikTokers.^[7][8][9] The most viral of which was posted by TikToker^[7] @jaimemercadoo, who referenced the Throwing a Microwaved Honey Bun at a Homeless Man meme, gaining roughly 356,200 likes in nine days (recording shown below).

By November 29th, 2023, the trend's primary TikTok sound^[4] had amassed over 52,600 posts.
