NARS Cosmetics Phallic Lipstick Ad refers to a short video advertisement for NARS Cosmetics Nude Morocco Lipstick originally posted to Instagram in August 2019. The video shows a close-up of the lipstick being melted in reverse, using the nude color and shape of the lipstick to purposefully resemble a penis.

Origin

On August 11th, 2019, NARS Cosmetics[1] posted a video of their lipstick being melted in reverse with the caption, "When the nudes keep you up all night. Reach the dawn with Morocco Lipstick, a warm cinnamon. #NARSAFTERHOURS" (shown below). The post garnered over 827,300 views in a day.

Spread

On August 11th, 2019, various Instagram users commented on the creativity of the ad. NARS replied to some of the comments suggesting they knew it looks phallic. Twitter user @yashar[2] reposted the video and gained over 13,100 likes and 2,800 retweets in a day (shown below).

Some Twitter users denounced the advertisement. For example, @eresateM[3] tweeted, "WoW. Remind me NOT to purchase anything NARS sells. This is too far. Teenage girls make most makeup purchases. I wouldn't want my kid thinking this ad was cool" (shown below, left). The tweet gained over 70 likes and 50 comments disagreeing with their statement. Chrissy Teigen[4] tweeted light-heartedly, "honestly in love with this color and now I must have it to soften my boner" (shown below, right). The tweet accumulated over 6,500 likes and 200 retweets in a day.

One one hand, I do think that the Twitter soccer moms complaining about this are kinda exaggerating when they think this will "corrupt their children" or something. Come on, you can find real dicks on the internet in less than a millisecond, I'm sure your child has seen worse.
On the other hand, this ad is just trashy as fuck. Who thought this was a good way to market their product?
