Nero Status or DMC Status is a series of bait-and-switch videos where clips of Nero and other characters from Devil May Cry set to the songs "Devil Trigger" and "Bury the Light" by Casey Edwards play at the end of unrelated videos. The meme, inspired by Revengeance Status from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, became popularized on YouTube in May through June 2022.

Origin

On March 21st, 2022, YouTuber^[1] DCfanatic posted a bait-and-switch video titled, "DMC Status #1," where a video of Emma Watson making a speech is interrupted by clips from Devil May Cry, gaining around 400 views in three months. On March 24th, YouTuber^[2] SEIMVOB posted a similar video titled, "devil may cry status," gaining over 86,000 views in three months (shown below).

The title "Nero Status" became more popular over the following months. On May 23rd, YouTuber^[3] Ash3R ShoW posted a video titled "NERO DMC STATUS" that begins with a clip from the anime series Citrus before abruptly cutting to a video of Nero from Devil May Cry over the song "Devil Trigger," gaining over 16,000 views in a month (shown below). This is the earliest known version of the meme.

On May 24th, 2022, YouTuber^[4] DinTroubleMaker posted a version of the meme titled "NOT Revengeance Status" using a clip of Nero that begins with him extending his middle finger towards the viewer and yelling, "Fuck you!" followed by further clips over the song, garnering over 45,000 views in a month (shown below). The scene where Nero flips off the viewer became one of the most frequently used clips in future versions of the meme.

On May 27th, YouTuber^[5] DinTroubleMaker uploaded another version of the meme, this time gaining over 143,000 views in a month (shown below, left). On the same day, YouTuber^[6] Kaustixthe2nd posted a version of the meme, gaining over 112,000 views in the same span of time (shown below, right).

On June 10th, YouTuber^[7] Ash3R ShoW posted a green screen version of the meme, gaining over 24,000 views in two weeks. On June 24th, YouTuber^[8] BeeG posted a version of the meme that begins with the circuitry and metallic video, gaining over 245,000 views in four days (shown below).

Revengeance Status refers to a series of bait-and-switch videos that end with a song or scene from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance to serve as a nonsensical punchline. Over time, the videos started by showing a suggestive or sexual situation and as the video is about to get explicit, it transitions into a fight between Raiden and Senator Armstrong, often while "Standing Here I Realize" plays in the background.
