About
Of Course You Have Blue Hair And Pronouns refers to a catchphrase used in image macros to poke fun at people who use preferred pronouns. The catchphrase started from a TikTok comment that was screenshotted and reposted to Twitter in September 2021. It then spread to Tumblr and Instagram in mostly LGBTQ+ meme circles as a way to be self-effacing.
Origin
In late September 2021, TikToker[1] @___johnny.sins___ replied to another user's comment on an unknown TikTok video, saying, "Of course you have blue hair and pronouns 😂." The comment was screenshotted and reposted to Twitter by Twitter[2] user @peristatic_ on September 23rd, 2021. The screenshot (shown below) shows that the comment received three likes.
Spread
As stated above, Twitter[2] user @peristatic_, who went by @YoltsPeri at the time, tweeted the screenshot on September 23rd, 2021, captioning the image, "BERDLY WHEN HE SEES KRIS IS IN THE DARK WORLD," in reference to the characters in the video game Deltarune. The tweet (shown below) received roughly 11,600 likes over the course of a month and a half.
On September 27th, 2021, the above tweet was reposted to Instagram by the Instagram[3] meme page @patrickwarburtonfan53 where it received roughly 11,800 likes over the course of a month and a half.
On September 27th, 2021, Twitter[4] user @mitskiblunt used the image in her own tweet, captioning it, "the cat when he met coraline:" in reference to the movie Coraline. The tweet (shown below) received roughly 119,700 likes over the course of a month and a half and is the first known derivative of the original tweet, besides a meme posted in the replies section of the original tweet from Twitter[5] user @mewniis on September 25th, 2021.
The catchphrase later spread to Tumblr in October 2021. On October 17th, 2021, Tumblr[6] user hewwoo posted an image macro meme that used the catchphrase. The template they used is a screenshot from the manga / anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. The meme (shown below) received roughly 13,300 notes over the course of one month and was also reposted to Instagram[7] a day later.
The catchphrase saw an increased amount of usage going into the rest of October 2021 and into November. Meme creators continued to use it within movie and television references, like having Homer say it to Marge in The Simpsons [8] or having the characters in the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind say it to each other,[9] among other references.
