About

"Oh, These Are Pretty Cool Bananas" is a viral edit of a clip taken from a commercial for the Game Boy game Donkey Kong Land. The edit resulted in several fan recreations of the clip.

Origin

The scene comes from a commercial for the 1995 Game Boy game Donkey Kong Land. In the commercial, a CG scene of Donkey Kong is shown where he walks up to a plate of bananas, picks them up, and is crushed by a falling Game Boy system (shown below).



On September 3rd, 2017, YouTube user Le Carlton[1] posted an edit of the scene (shown below) which adds the voice lines "Oh, these are pretty cool bananas.", followed by screaming as Donkey Kong is crushed by the Game Boy. The edited clip received over 4.2 million views in over seven years.

Edits of the video started appearing on YouTube in late 2017 and early 2018. On October 14th, 2017, ToonTheWindwaker[2] posted a slowed down version of the video (shown below) which received over 123,000 views in over four years.



On January 4th, 2018, M3m3wazhere[3] posted a YouTube video (shown below) which plays the scene multiple times at once, which eventually ended at playing it the video 1,572,864 times at once. The video received over 476,000 views in over seven years.



On March 5th, 2019, YouTube account Oh These Are Pretty Cool Bananas[4] posted a YTP-styled edit of the video (shown below), which received over 336,000 views in over six years.



On March 9th, 2019, BagelBoy[5] posted a YouTube video (shown belo) in which Donkey Kong fights the giant Game Boy as a fanmade sequel to the original video. The video received over 1.4 million views in over six years.



On February 29th, 2020, YouTube user InternetCrybaby64[6] reposted a recreation of the scene (shown below) made by HutchTheGOAT[7] in the PS4 game Dreams. The video received over 209,000 views in over five years.



On May 5th, 2020, Samuel Pastel[8] posted a fan recreation of the scene using a FNAF x Sonic the Hedgehog crossover character named Toy Sonic (shown below). The video received over 220,000 views in five years.
