About

Online Millennial refers to a dialogue snowclone popular on Tumblr that satirizes web-based marketing to millennial in which a brand attempts to present itself as hip on social media in attempt to relate to the demographic.

Origin

On March 13th, 2016, Tumblr user gotitforcheap, since deactivated, posted a dialogue meme imagining millennials talking about eating at McDonald's after seeing McDonald's have a witty interaction online.[1] The post has gained over 101,000 notes (shown below).

gotitforcheap online millennial: did you see that clapback McDonald did on twitter today? other online millennial: yes, it was cool both online millennial, in unison: today we will eat at McDonald

Spread

The post was popular but did not become a popular snowclone until McDonald's Anti-Trump Tweet on March 16th, 2017. After the McDonald's Twitter account sent Donald Trump a mean tweet, some people responded with support for the company, pledging that they would eat McDonald's that day (shown below).

Mariel Reynolds @bluelex510 y Follow Might eat @McDonalds today for lunch for that. Here's 2 u brave, unemployed, social media mgr! A nation turned its eyes to u for a moment. 9:45 AM- 16 Mar 2017 씩

Buzzfeed included the above tweet in a photoset post for their Tumblr[2] account. User Papatalus responded with a screenshot of gotitforcheap's post, making it appear as though gotitforcheap predicted the event. Following that, the "online millennial" post developed into a snowclone on Tumblr where "McDonald's" was replaced (examples shown below). On May 27th, 2017, memedocumentation[3] covered the spread of the meme on Tumblr.

Are the people behind the Twitter accounts for food chains not… you know, also young themselves..? Here is Wendy's Twitter handle's person behind it:

And, while not a fast food chain, Sonic_Hedgehog's:

And nobody tells these people what to say exactly. So, how would them be "pandering to millennials"..? They are pretty much millennials themselves, acting natural and having fun at their job, which so just happens to resonate well with others.

I am not saying this is not a marketing strategy, because yes, it is, but… why is that automatically a bad thing..? Would they rather have companies advertise through boring TV ads that nobody cares about..? Pretend their product is the hottest shit out there, when even Sonic_Hedgehog has poked fun countless times about the more shitty Sonic games..? Or flood the internet with even more ads that most of us block..? Moreover, what right does Tumblr of all places have to criticize others about pandering to the youth..? None of the crazy ideals originated or mainly encouraged on Tumblr are adopted by anyone above 25 or so, so that place is pretty much millennial haven, so joke is on them.
