About
Owen Posts, also known as Owenposing, refers to a series of memes on the Star Wars meme subreddit /r/PrequelMemes referring to a viral post by u/ejrea asking out a user of the board named Owen. The post resulted in a response from Owen, revealed to be u/SirExplosive, who declined the proposition. The exchange resulted in numerous memes about it on the board over the course of early April 2021.
Origin
On April 8th, 2021, Redditor u/ejrea posted to /r/PrequelMemes[1] under the title "Hey Owen, just in case you sort by new…" along with an image macro mimicking the Drakeposting format asking Owen out. The post gained over 99,800 upvotes and hundreds of awards in a day (shown below).
Later that day, u/SirExplosive posted to /r/PrequelMemes,[2] "'When u/ejrea asks you out'" along with an image of Anakin Skywalker saying "I shouldn't," rejecting u/ejrea's proposition and garnering over 31,200 upvotes in under a day (shown below).
That same day, u/SirExplosive then posted a comment[3] to their post further explaining why he had to reject u/ejrea's request to date, the main reason being he just got out of a relationship where he felt he "dropped the ball" and didn't want to subject anyone else to that (shown below).
Shortly after Owen's post, u/ejrea made another post to /r/PrequelMemes[4] with an image macro showing that there were no hard feelings and that the two would remain friends, garnering over 40,400 upvotes in 17 hours (shown below).
Spread
The exchange between u/SirExplosive and u/ejrea inspired numerous memes on /r/PrequelMemes[5][6]over the course of the next two days as users joked about it (examples shown below, left and right).
Unaware users who missed the exchange began posting memes wondering who Owen was on April 9th, which became the dominant memes later that day. For example, on April 9th, Redditor u/RobotfaceX posted an image macro to /r/PrequelMemes[7] using an image of the Star Wars character Uncle Ben showing confusion, garnering over 35,000 upvotes in six hours (shown below).
