Painfully Thick refers to a McDonald's ad campaign in which they advertised their milkshakes with the slogan "Painfully Thick." The phrase became a reaction image and Drakeposting parody in the late 2010s playing on the slang term thicc.

Origin

The earliest known instance of commentary on the ad was posted November 30th, 2009 by Falkon Digital,^[1] who commented on how it was humorously placed next to a L'Oreal ad featuring Cheryl Cole (shown below).

Spread

The campaign was noticed by several others over the following year, appearing in posts on the charlottehancocks blogspot^[2] and on McServed.^[3] It was posted to Cheezburger on July 7th, 2014^[4] (shown below, left). A That's What She Said joke with the image was posted to Jokideo^[5] on July 9th of that year (shown below, right).

The image began seeing usein the anime community in the late 2010s. On March 4th, 2018, Redditor koalamaster12334433 made an image macro about Doki Doki Literature Club that gained over 870 likes (shown below, left). User ProffesionalWaifu posted an edit to /r/saber^[6] on March 20th, 2019 that gained over 1,000 points (shown below, right).
