Penis Explosion Chamber is a fictional method of punishment often mentioned in memes and jokes online. Spawned by a Captain Picard Tumblr meme and popularized thanks to a Mr. Electric, Send Him to the Principal's Office meme, the catchphrase saw use online starting in 2021.

Origin

On February 12th, 2021, Tumblr^[1] user bigprettygothgf wrote, "send that man to the penis explosion room immediately." Later that day, Tumblr user powermonk replied, "picard," with bigprettygothgf responding with an image macro of Captain Picard from Star Trek captioned with the phrase. The exchange^[2] accumulated over 32,300 likes and reblogs in two years (exchange shown below, left; image macro shown below, right).

Spread

In the following months, the image was frequently reposted on iFunny. On August 24th, 2021, the user __________NATE__________ notably shared^[3] it, with the post gaining over 3,700 smiles on the app in two years.

Prior to August 21st, 2021, during the period of popularity of the Mr. Electric, Send Him to the Principal's Office on iFunny, an unknown user incorporated the phrase into a version of the meme (since deleted). On August 21st, Twitter^[4] user @Scotty24k made the earliest found repost of the image, with the post gaining over 220 retweets and 1,500 likes in two years (shown below).

This version of the meme achieved viral spread online, with several voiced versions appearing in 2021 and 2022. For example, on November 19th, 2021, iFunny^[5] user Slapstick posted a voiced version that received over 220 smiles in two years (shown below). On December 26th, Redditor Dez_nuts69 reposted the video, with the post receiving over 11,200 upvotes in the /r/MoldyMemes^[6] subreddit in the same period.

In the following years, the phrase "penis explosion chamber" appeared or was referenced in a variety of joke posts and memes online on Reddit, Twitter and TikTok.
