Anitta is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, dancer and businesswoman known in Brazil for the release of her single "Show das Poderosas" in 2013. On the web, the singer has a dedicated fanbase that creates memes, Photoshop edits, and many other formats of memes featuring her. She gained more significant international notoriety after being "snubbed" at the Grammy's in February 2023.

Career

Born Larissa de Macedo Machado[1] on March 30, 1993, the Brazilian singer known as Anitta got her first top song in 2012, with the release of "Meiga e Abusada." The official music video, uploaded to her official YouTube[2] channel on December 18th, 2012, has garnered 119 million views and 820,000 likes as of February 2023 (seen below).

In 2013, she released her self-titled debut album, the first of many commercially successful albums she released locally in Brazil. The singer joined YouTube[2] on November 2nd, 2011, and as of February 2023, she has accumulated 17 million subscribers on the platform, 63.6 million followers on Instagram[3] and 21.9 million followers on TikTok.[4]

Much like the pop stars fans of Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga, Anitta's fans are very active on social media, creating buzz over the singer's new releases and trends. The Twitter fan account Anitta Update[8], created on April 2011, has 223,000 followers on the platform. On Instagram, the page @anittaupdatebr[9] accumulates 97,000 followers.

One notable meme video about Anita was created on January 19th, 2023. After a video of the Brazilian singer taking pictures with fans gained notoriety on social media, the montage was posted on Twitter[10] by @guiportela_ in which Anitta is a cashier passing items (her fans) as the checkout machine does the beep sound. The video received 1.8 million views and 46,000 likes in three weeks (seen below).

Appearance in the 2023 Grammy Awards

On February 5th, 2023, the 65th annual Grammy Awards ceremony took place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Anitta was one of the nominees for the Best New Artist category and the first Brazilian to ever participate in the segment. The expectations from fans online instigated several reaction memes about the award ceremony, like in the below tweet by Twitter[5] user @anittinhahtweet. Posted on February 5th, 2023, it celebrates the singer's career from a local star in Rio de Janeiro to a Grammy nominee representing Brazil. The post received 1,000 likes and 150 retweets in one day.

The American Jazz singer Samara Joy won the award for best new artist,[5] leaving Anitta's fans with only memes to express their sadness for the Brazilian's defeat. Twitter[6] user @joaofirmno tweeted on the same day that they believed the Grammy's used Anitta only for "engagement on social media." The post garnered 175,000 views and 1,100 likes in one day.

Girl From Rio

In April 2021, singer Anitta released her new single "Girl from Rio" featuring American rapper DaBaby. The track mixes the classic melody of "Garota de Ipanema" with remixed hip-hop beats. Uploaded to her official channel, the YouTube[11] video (seen below) received 45 million views and 1.4 million likes in two years.

The promo image for the single drew attention on social media. The image features the singer posing on top of a plastic chair in front of a bus with a sign announcing "Girl from Rio." The photograph soon went viral, being remixed into several memes.

The Twitter[12] user @futureberg_ posted a series of Photoshop edits with other pop singers inside Anitta's bus. The post, uploaded on April 23rd, 2021, received 31,300 likes and 4,100 retweets in two years (images seen below).

Personal Life

Anitta was born on March 30th, 1993 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her Spanish single "Envolver,"[13] released in late 2021, reached the top of Spotify Global in March 2022, making her the first Brazilian person and the first Latin American artist with a solo[14] song to do so. Later on, she was included in the Guinness Book of Records for her achievement.

On August 5th, 2022, Anitta announced her support[7] for Lula (PT) for the 2022 Brazilian General Election. “I only realized this when I was asked for a political opinion and I didn't understand anything. I hate being a layman in matters and went to study. Nowadays, I'm getting into it too much,” she said in a press conference.
