About

The Board of Peace is an intergovernmental organization started by U.S. President Donald Trump that is meant to promote peacekeeping, founded to implement a peace plan and oversee the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip following the Hamas-Israel conflict. The Board of Peace was announced in September 2025 and mandated in November, with the founding charter signed on January 22nd, 2026. The Board of Peace was met with criticism by some, who found its existence unnecessary and likened it to a club. By late January 2026, about 22 countries accepted their invitations to join the board, while countries including France, Norway and Sweden declined, and countries including Italy, Germany and Russia were noncommittal.

In late January 2026, Canada's invitation to join the Board of Peace was revoked after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized Trump's use of tariffs as a weapon during his push to acquire Greenland. The Board of Peace increasingly became the subject of memes in early 2026, including memes that imagine the members of the Board of Peace as notable villains.

History

Background

In late September 2025, surrounding international talks about the end of the Israel-Hamas conflict and the reconstruction plan for the Gaza Strip post-conflict, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a peace plan that reportedly received wide international backing.[1]

In mid-October 2025, a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza was announced. Trump announced shortly after that the war was "over" and he would set up the Board of Peace quickly.[2]

On November 17th, 2025, Resolution 2803 was adopted with 13 votes in favor. China and Russia notably abstained from voting. The resolution supports the implementation of Trump's peace plan to end the Gaza conflict and set up an international force to help stabilize the area. This resolution also resulted in the creation of the Board of Peace, which would help oversee Gaza's reconstruction.[3]

Some criticized the Board of Peace and the stabilization force as a "power grab" by President Trump, as its proposed charter purportedly gives Trump alone the power to "veto decisions, approve the agenda, invite members, dissolve the board entirely and designate his own successor."[4]

Charter Signing

On January 22nd, 2026, the Board of Peace charter was signed during an event at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.[5]

Canada's Invitation Revoked

On January 21st, 2026, at the World Economic Forum, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized Trump and politicians in general who use tariffs as a weapon and tool for leverage. The speech reportedly received a standing ovation.[6]

On January 22nd, President Trump made a post on Truth Social[7] revoking Canada's invitation to the Board of Peace, writing, "Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada’s joining, what will be, the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time." The post gained over 25,000 likes in a day.
