About
Pior Que É or Poor Sad Homeless Dog is an image macro of a skinny, sad-looking dog paired with the Portuguese caption "prior que é," which is internet slang based on the expression "pior que é verdade" (English: "the worse part is that it's true") that's used to agree with something that seems so outrageous or untrue but is actually factual. The meme was popularized as a reaction image on Twitter around February 2023.
Origin
The stock image titled "Poor Sad Homeless Dog" used in the meme was first uploaded by artist Igor Zakowski on several royalty-free vector websites. One of the earliest available was posted on June 4th, 2014, on the Cre Stock[1] site (shown below).
On November 25th, 2021, Facebook[7] meme page @motherofpet uploaded the stock image paired with the caption "Pior que é," amassing roughly 72 likes and 46 shares in three years. The earliest viral post using the stock image, however, was found on February 6th, 2023, when Twitter[2] user @coutoartdump made a humorous tweet in Portuguese saying, "Baby, I adopted a dog of the 'Pior Que É' breed," which garnered over 8,600 likes and 1,100 retweets in five months. Shortly after, Twitter user @sunyflx then posted the image macro featuring the stock image dog and the overlay text "pior que é" as a response to the tweet (shown below).
Spread
The meme became popularized a month later in March 2023 when Brazilian Twitter users started to post about their favorite dog memes as if they were actual breeds. For instance, Twitter[3] @dandiidii posted a picture of her puppy on March 17th, 2023, alongside the poor sad homeless dog meme and the Portuguese caption "My dog is so alike the 'pior que é' [meme]." The post (shown below, left) garnered over 113,000 likes and 11,400 retweets in four months. On May 16th, Twitter[4] user @PagDeFutRuim compared a Brazilian footballer's pet with the meme (shown below, right), garnering over 14,100 likes and 1,400 retweets in two months.
On May 3rd, 2023, Twitter[5] user meowfansub shared his feelings about the school's exam week arriving using the "pior que é" meme as a reaction image. The post (shown below) garnered over 450 likes and seven retweets in two months.
Ainda Bem Que É
"Ainda Bem Que É" is a reverse meme version of "pior que é." For instance, Twitter[6] user @prominses posted the image in a tweet about the members of K-pop group BTS on May 22nd, 2023. The post (shown below) garnered over 3,500 likes and 750 retweets in two months.
