Player Select is an animation meme which uses the 2005 Gorillaz song "Dirty Harry". The meme became popular on YouTube in 2016, and resulted in several fan animations.

Origin

The first video using the format (shown below) was posted to YouTube on August 4th, 2016, by a user named moldpaw^[1] (formely known as sslum, as well as crabmeat). The video shows different characters on a "player select" screen with the Gorillaz song "Dirty Harry" playing in the background. The video received over 156,000 views over seven years.

Spread

Other videos using the song and a similar format followed shortly after. On December 9th, 2016, YouTube user UnknownSpy^[2] posted a video using the song and their own original characters, the "Media Controls". The video (shown below, left) received over 2.5 million views in over seven years. On April 15th, 2017, YouTube user милч^[3] posted a video using the song and characters from Night in The Woods. The video (shown below, right) received over 179,000 views in over seven years.

On August 31st, 2018, YouTube user Ijustwannahavefun^[4] posted a video using the song and various creepypasta characters, such ass Jeff the Killer and Ben Drowned. The video (shown below, left) received over 936,000 views in over five years. On February 16th, 2020, YouTube user 후야^[5] posted a video using the song and various CountryHumans characters. The video (shown below, right) received over 1.1 million views in over four years.
