Post this X refers to a series of cropped image macros in which a photo of an animal or a person is paired with the phrase "Post this X", encouraging others to repost the image.
Origin
The exact origin is unknown, but the earliest found example in the Post This X format was an August 30th, 2019, Twitter [1] post by wukabalsa. The user tweeted a cropped image macro of a hamster with the text "POST THIS HAMSTER," gaining 60 likes and over 20 retweets (shown below).
The following week, on September 7th, 2019, a"Redditor":/memes/sites/reddit posted it to the subreddit r/195,[2] gaining 12 upvotes and over 14,000 views on Imgur, before the user deactivated their account. On September 23rd, the image was reposted to Tumblr [3] by user tetohina where it gained over 26,000 notes in under eleven months.
Spread
Over the next few months, the format continued to spread on various platforms. On October 12th, Redditor Jalen2612 posted an image of a fat Shiba Inu sitting with the caption "POST THIS DOG" to r/okbuddyretard, [4] gaining more than 25 upvotes in 10 months (shown below, left).
On October 16th, Tumblr[5] user teddiursam posted the image, gaining over 40,000 notes in 10 months.
On February 23rd, 2020, Tumblr[6] user vlad-the-impaler-with-pencils posted a meme in the format featuring Isabelle from Animal Crossing that gained over 19,000 notes in under six months (shown below, right).
On March 5th, 2020, a sped-up GIF of a rat with the caption "POST THIS RAT" was on the profile of a Flash Flash Revolution[7] user (shown below, left). That day, YouTuber Reaxt[8] uploaded an edited version of the GIF, gaining over 3,000 views in four months (shown below, right). On March 21st, Tenor user Саща uploaded the GIF to Tenor.[9]
On May 10th, 2020, Redditor MrGrizzco posted an image of Virtual YouTuber Inugami Korone with the caption "POST THIS DOG" to r/VirtualYouTubers,[10] gaining more than 120 upvotes. On May 20th, content creator TJ "Henry" Yoshi used the image in reply to a tweet,[11] gaining almost 500 likes and 30 retweets.
